Configure ingest settings

Configure ingest settings to control how media files are copied, transcoded, and managed when you import them into your project.

Ingest settings are useful to ensure that your media is in the right format and location for efficient editing.

Before you begin

Open your project or create a new one.

Configure ingest settings

Select File > Project Settings > Ingest Settings.
In the Ingest Settings tab, select Ingest, then choose one of the following operations to automatically ingest files when imported into the project. You can continue to edit while the ingest process completes in the background.

Copy: You can copy the media as it's to a new location. For example, this option is typically used to transfer camera footage from removable media onto your local hard drive. The transfer path is specified by the Primary Destination option available in Ingest Settings. After the media is copied, the clips in the project point to these copies of the files.
Transcode: Select whether you want to transcode your media files to a different format upon import. For example, this option is typically used to transcode original camera footage to a specific format used within a post-production facility. After the media has been transcoded, the clips in the project point to these transcoded copies of the files.
Create Proxies: Use this option to create and attach proxies to the media. For example, this option creates lower-resolution clips for increased performance during editing, which can be switched back to the original complete resolution files for final output. After proxies are generated, they are automatically attached to the clips in the project.
Copy and Create Proxies: This option also copies media and creates proxies for them.

To add custom presets created using Adobe Media Encoder, select Add Ingest Preset and navigate to the saved preset (.epr) file.
After selecting your ingest option, choose the Primary Destination and Proxy Destination (if creating proxies).
Select OK.

Result

Now, when you import media into your project, the ingest settings you've defined will be applied. Premiere Pro will copy, transcode, and manage the media files according to your settings.
