With the Free Public beta program, you can try out experimental features and builds of Substance 3D Modeler before they reach full release. Public beta builds are generally less stable than the current non-beta build of Modeler, so we advise that you avoid using the Public beta for time-critical work.

Joining the Free Public beta is easy, and doesn't require an existing Creative Cloud subscription. Find out how to join the Free Public beta here.

Don't forget to join the Modeler Community to share your feedback and suggest improvements to these in-development features.

Substance 3D Modeler Beta 1.16.50 overview

Beta 1.16.50 introduces some UI improvements to the primitives workflow and a collection of general quality of life improvements and bug fixes.

Modeler V1.16.50 full release notes

Note:

Right clicking a primitive in your scene can make a "Contributing components" popup appear instead of the expected Actions menu. This is unintentional behavior. To avoid this, right click in empty space in the Viewport to bring up the Actions menu as normal.

Primitives:

  • Moved the Width and Depth sliders to the top of Combine mode parameters when they’re available, as they’re generally the more important parameters.
  • Changed default values of Primitives Width and Depth sliders to non-zero values so that it’s easier to visualize results of various combine modes immediately on selection.
  • Pasted and duplicated primitives are now added after the lowest selected object in the hierarchy at the current scope. If nothing is selected, objects will be added at the bottom of the current group or container in the hierarchy.
  • General primitives performance improvements.
  • Fixed an issue where using Show all wouldn’t properly unhide primitive objects.
  • Fixed an issue where empty groups could break certain primitive combine modes.
  • Fixed a crash that could happen when creating a clay layer after creating a primitive.

Quality of life:

  • Added a list of shortcuts inside the app. To view shortcuts, use Help > View Shortcuts...
    • To close the shortcuts menu, use Esc.
  • Added a right click menu to items in the Recent projects tab of the welcome menu. Right click an item to view it in the file browser, or remove it from the list.
  • X and Y scaling values are now linked for various shapes where it makes sense, both for primitives and clay brushes, so that it’s not possible to scale values independently. Affected shapes:
    • N-gon, Capsule, Ovoid, Gouge.
  • Increased the intensity range for lights and IBL backgrounds.
  • Added the option to import objects as meshes from the Assets Library panel. Uncheck “Prefer clay if available” to instead import the mesh version of objects.

General changes and fixes:

  • Up-res settings have been updated behind the scenes, so you may need to re-select your preferred up-res method.
  • Removed the ability to pilot cameras.
    • Cameras can still be created from the Actions menu and Quick actions bar.
    • Move cameras with the gizmo on Desktop, or with Gizmo or Free placement in VR.
    • On desktop, to look through a camera:
      • Open the Viewport panel
      • Use Set camera to..., and select a camera.
  • Fixed an issue where tapping Alt mid-smooth would break Modeler.
  • Fixed an issue with rotation snapping where it wouild sometimes move the object back to the origin.
  • Fixed an issue where the selected color displayed in the Color picker was subtly different to the color in the scene, particularly with darker colors.
  • Fixed an issue where the display of the rotation angle value could be hidden by geometry while rotating an object.
