Common questions (FAQs) about the generative features in InDesign.

Frequently asked questions

What are the generative AI features available in InDesign and who can access them?

Text to Image and Generative Expand are the Adobe Firefly-powered generative features available in the InDesign app wherever Adobe provides services. They're designed to be safe for commercial use. These features are not available in mainland China.

Are they part of users’ existing subscriptions, or must they pay an additional fee for this capability?

InDesign users can access Text to Image and Generative Expand as part of their license. These tools are designed for safe commercial use. These features are not available in mainland China.

Why did you bring generative AI features into InDesign?

InDesign is one of the Creative Cloud apps that natively integrates Adobe Firefly, Adobe’s powerful generative AI technology. You can now use the power of Adobe Firefly directly in the InDesign app to enrich your creative processes and outputs.

Will generative AI features replace existing tools in InDesign?

Text to Image and Generative Expand are generative AI-powered capabilities that complement existing InDesign tools.

What are the system requirements for using generative AI features?

The system requirements for generative features are the same as the InDesign system requirements.

Do you need to be connected to the Internet to use the Generative AI features?

Yes, you must be connected to the Internet to use the Generative AI features.

What languages and regions are generative features in InDesign available?

Generative features are available in the InDesign app, wherever Adobe provides services in English only. They are designed to be safe for commercial use. These features are not available in mainland China.

Is the generated image editable?

All the images generated using the generative AI features are editable outputs that can be edited like any other image in InDesign.

Are any tutorials or learning guides available for the generative AI features in InDesign?

Check out the Text to Image and Generative Expand helpx pages to learn more about these features.

What essential tips and tricks are needed to get the most out of the generative AI features in the InDesign app?

Write an effective text prompt to get amazing results. Stick with simple and direct language, and use 3-8 words that include a description, character, color, scene, and more. Don’t worry about adding commands like “add” or “remove”. Instead, use simple phrases like “sunrise behind mountains”, “man with headphones”, and “ice cream parlor”.

What is the maximum resolution of the output created using generative AI features in InDesign?

The Firefly model currently returns an output of 2K resolution for generated images (up to 4K for expands) to InDesign.

What are Generative Credits, and how many are applied while using generative AI features in InDesign?

Please view the article about Generative credits for more information.

Bias and safety

How is Adobe addressing bias and testing for safety and harm in Firefly?

It’s important to us to create a model that respects our customers and aligns with our company values. In addition to training on inclusive datasets, we continually test our model to mitigate against perpetuating harmful stereotypes. The Firefly team is working hard to identify and resolve any issues as we find them. At the same time, you can report negative results using the Report tool available in every image.

Commercial use

What does “commercial use” mean?

Commercial use refers to any type of usage that generates commercial activity for you, your brand, or your business—for example, selling, using print & digital promotional materials or in the sale of products & content.

Does “commercial use” mean I am protected from accidental copyright infringement?

As part of Adobe’s effort to design Firefly to be commercially safe, we are training our initial commercial Firefly model on Adobe Stock images, openly licensed content, and public domain content where copyright has expired. However, we cannot provide assurance about any specific output and that requires each creator to do their own due diligence.

Content authenticity

How is Adobe building transparency to ensure that content created with Generative AI technology is properly labeled?

InDesign will automatically append Content Credentials to files generated using generative features in InDesign and exported as JPG, PNG, or SVG, so you know when an image was created or edited in InDesign, leveraging Firefly's generative AI technology.

What are Content Credentials?

Content Credentials are a new tool you can use to apply extra information about yourself and your creative process directly to your assets.

How is Adobe thinking about protecting creators and their creative work?

Through efforts like the Content Authenticity Initiative and the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, Adobe is standing up for accountability, responsibility, and transparency in generative AI and Firefly. We’re just scratching the surface of generative AI, and every day, the technology is improving. As it continues to evolve, generative AI will bring new challenges, and it’s imperative that industry, government, and community work together to solve them. We welcome our community to help shape the tools we’re building with this transformational new technology by trying them out and providing feedback.

Models or training

Where does Firefly get its data from?

The current Firefly generative AI model is trained on a dataset of Adobe Stock along with openly licensed work and public domain content where copyright has expired.

Will I have the option to train Firefly on my own work/IP?

As Firefly evolves, Adobe is exploring ways for creators to train the machine learning model with their own assets so they can generate content that matches their unique style without the influence of other creators’ content.

As an Adobe customer, will I have my content automatically used to train Firefly?

No. We do not train on any Creative Cloud subscribers’ personal content. For Adobe Stock contributors, the content is part of Firefly’s training dataset, in accordance with Stock Contributor license agreements.
